Taking a break from the "Go to Game"

We all have that one game that is our go to game. Its the game that everyone plays some people in the group may play competitively others play because its whats the group plays. None the less this go to game is played week in week out during the weekly gaming time and normally everyone is happy but eventually even the most diehards get burned out playing the same. That is where the game break comes in. The idea is that once a month the group take a night off and plays a one off game, a game that would either be provided by a member of the group or group of members. Each month would be a different game giving players a chance to check out other games without having to pick up enough stuff to play the game. I now its a simple concept but you would be surprised how many players get stuck in rut playing the same game over and over again. This would also allow those of use that like to play a wide variety of games a chance to break those games our occasionally.

I haven't actually put this concept into work yet but I am working on it with the local forum so hopefully in the near future we will have a schedule of upcoming games up and running.

1st Post of the New Year

Well its finally 2011 and like lots of people I am resolving to do many things. Now probably most of my resolutions will just end up crap but hopefully a couple will stick. The 1st being that I will post on this blog more frequently even if its just a painting update. With that said welcome to my 1st painting blog post. Just kidding..then end of 2010 was a bit weird I went from gaming twice a week to zero immediately after Gencon. Most of that time I spend working through a lot of personal issues and pretty much the demise of the gaming group that I have gamed with for going on five years. Things are looking up I am having fun playing Warmachine again and I am really loving MERCS. Speaking of MERCS you may have noticed they have made the “Top Ten Links” over there on the right. I see a bright future for MERCS, I love the art, the story and the game is great two and the dev team is local which is awesome.

Painting Blog 1/11/11
In addition to getting back to gaming I have also been painting again something I haven’t done since before Gencon. I am currently working on my MERCS stuff I have an “Yellow Jackets” squad and a USCR squad but I love this stuff so much I will more than likely own them all eventually. Below are a couple of WIP shots of the Yellow Jackets Squad Leader Figure. I would call this tabletop quality I am trying to stay away from metallic to help match the look with the artwork from the book so it has a kind of flat look.

These are a couple of early shots of the base coat. I am still working out the orange detail pieces and how to detail out the face mask.

Here are shots of the model about 90% complete. There base is still being finished with its forward firing arc. I have turfed the base as well and the model as been washed and highlighted.

Keep and eye out for MERCS this game has huge potential the models are great the artwork is awesome and it is a blast to play.
Happy New Year!
Hear's hoping its better than last year.

Sovereign Wars and C2 Games

It's been kinda slow around here lately but even thought the blog has been slow I have been fairly busy. Between playing Warmachine and painting up models I have also been working on a side project for a while now and all of the pieces are finally starting to fall into place. Without further delay I would like to announce CGames and Sovereign Wars. Check out the CGames blog here. What does this announcement mean for this place? Well its hard to say I am still a big gamer at heart so there will always be something going on but I guess time will tell....

Also before I forget I have also been working with a local group to solidify our local gaming scene. Check that site out at www.CircelCityGamers.com

Gencon D-1::Setup Day

This is a shot of the Angel(I believe that is is the Sierra Angel from Magic the Gathering) that is positioned at the top of the main escalator as you head up toward the Sagamore Ball Rooms.

Gencon D-1:: Setup Day
Not much going on today its basically a free day to get all your event stuff up into the rooms and setup for the next day. I was also able to hang out with all of my old Confrontation buddies from all over the country.

The Agenda for Tomorrow
I have Ambush Alley Demos from 8 to Noon and then the day is open until 8pm when I have a large Force on Force game. I am hoping to get into he dealer room and check out Ex-Illis,Malifaux and then find my way over to the Alpha Omega booth and pick a copy of The Encountered(?). I am also planning on checking out Arcane Legions as well.

Check back tomorrow for updates as I can write them up and post them.

Awesome new Terrain and Painting site

Not sure if this site is actually new or not but it has some great work on it

I am not going to go into a huge review of the site but I can say that there is a lot of well produced terrain and miniatures on ther a well as a tutorial that shows how they put things together. I may not be up to this level of building but it give me a lot of ideal on how to approace scenery. Oh and the pictures are great as well.

Warmachine Mk2 Report, Other News

Warmachine Mk2 Battle Report, 5/21/09 Mercs vs Mercs
Thursday I was able to throw down with another local Totengräber in some Merc vs Merc action. Since the Mark 2 rules are still kinda of new to us this game was still more of a learning game but was still a blast to play.

For this battle we played 35 points which allows for a little more flexibility and defiently put a lot more stuff on the table here are the lists:
Totengräber
  • Magnus, the Traitor
  • Steelhead Halberdiers x6
  • Stannis Brocker
  • Mule
  • Mangler
  • Renegade
  • Vanguard
  • Dirty Meg with Talon Jack Marshalled
  • Orin Midwinter

Sryth
  • Fiona, the Black
  • Alexia and the Risen
  • Steelhead Halberdiers x6
  • Sea Dogs x6
  • Buccaneer
  • Mangler
  • Mariner
  • Bosun Grogspar
  • Aiyanne and Holt
  • Master Gunner Dougal McNaile

I was lucky enough to win the initiative roll and choose to go second forcing Totengräber to deploy and go first. The first turn itself was pretty much the same for both of us all about moving up into position and setting up for the second turn. I was able to get a shot off with Mariner on the Vanguard but did little damage. Turn two resulted in more movement some shooting and some Orin Midwinter magic limitation. I was able to get a charge off with the halberdiers and killed a few infantry models feeding more risen to Alexia. From the 3rd turn on the game boiled down in to a war of attrition with Alexia chruning out Risen all of the open terrain between Fionna and all of Totengräber's are hitting jacks as well as Magnus. In the end we both tried one last ditch effort to get a caster kill in but to no avail. Overall I would have gathered the most victory points because I had killed all of the infantry on the table(to the point I was killing my own guys to get more Risen) however Totengräber still had both of his heavies as well as
Vanguard.

Overall I did learn a lot from this game the primary thing is I need to be more agressive with my Jacks and use Alexia to manage the enemy infantry specially against a caster like Magnus mainly due to his high armor. I am going to have to dedicate a Jack or two to Magnus in order to take him out.

New Mass Combat Collectible game?

Logo With Text

Tabletop Gaming News reported on this earlier this month and most recently Wells Expedition the compnay behnd the game has releases images from the game and also talked a bit more about how the game is going to be distributed . I am not going to rehash the entire article but I can say that the concept is interesting and from the pictures the painting masters look good I am a bit concerned because the designers are ex-Wizkids employees but Wizkids did make good games earlier in the life it wasn't till the end that things went crazy. Hopefully they can fulfill this promises and provide a solid game in an easy to collectable format.

The New and Improved Indy Gamer

Its been what two maybe three months since my last post...ok maybe a bit more than that but to be honest my normal posting time are now filled by..gasp..work. With that said I have been trying to make some tme to post about my own personal gaming and also whats going on in the Indy scene.  I am also going to make an effort to add some more sections and posts to the site about what I am currently working on along with that I have recently added the ability to post via my cell phone with has a camera so I will be blogging about gencon and other gaming events I am attending as well as  possiblly even local game nights.

Thats enough about the site here is the big news that has really got me excited

I can't say enough about the new rules, they have fixed the learning curve and made the game fun to play and easier to understand. Don't get me wrong the depth is still there as well as the complexity but over the game is far more accessable. As of right now Warmachine Mark 2 is the #1 game on my list as far as games I want to play. I am also working on a  mercenary army in between all of my commission work an work from Gencon.

Speaking of Gencon work continues on all of the terrain for the Ambush Alley Games that myself and a friend are running at Gencon this year. We will be testing the games in June to see where we are with out knowledge as well as how the just release rules for Force of Force battles work.

I think that pretty much covers the current news and what is going on currently expect to see more in the days ahead as I will out the new shell of the website

Warlord,Hordes,C3 and Gencon

Its been almost a month since my last update and to be honest it has actually been pretty quite on the gaming front around here. The local gaming group continues to play Warlord but we are branching out people are starting to play Games Workshop games again specially with the release of 40k 5th edition coming soon. We are also talking about Confrontation again which is always a good thing. I personally am gearing up for the big(possibly last) C3 tournament that is being held at Gencon this year. The goal at the moment it to get a couple of games in between now and August so I can have the best list possible ready to go which also means a fully painted army.

With all the fun being had with Warlord,C3 and Warhammer I have also decided to finish up my Trollbloods for Hordes. I know what some of you are thinking, "But you hate Privateer Press", not true I am not a fan of Warmachine, Hordes to me has better game mechanics and just plays better. Its also a newer game so its a bit easier to jump into. Currently I have about 500 points and am building up to 750 in anticipation for the fall league.

Gencon, what else is there to say its that time and year and Gencon is only 5 weeks away. 5 weeks until a much needed vacation and the nice thing is this year I pretty much am going obligation free, not demos to do, no major gaming group presence its all about basking in gaming goodness and seeing what is out there. With that said I am going to do my best to post to the blog nightly and have pictures if I can get my hands on a camera.

In other minor news, I have finished the 4th book in the Dresden Files series in the last couple of days. I have also been playing EVE online, again after it most resent update I got an additional 14 days of trial period to try out the new PVP features unfortunately I don't have any characters that qualify for the features in game yet so I have been doing as much as I can to at least see PVP stuff before the trial runs out. PVP was one of the things I was most interested in but EVE is kinda of a long tedious game and it was going to take way to long for me to get to the point where I could get into the main PVP part of the game the new features seem to fix this.

Thats it for now hopefully I will have another update prior to Gencon but I make no promises as life always seems to find a way to distract me. Oh almost forgot I added a new link to the navigation on the site you Circle City Gamers a forum of gamers in Central Indiana to meet up,discuss all types of gaming.

Warlord,Warhammer, Dresden FIles

Since its only been about 2 weeks since my last post not a while lot have been happening. The local group has picked up Warlord and they seem to be pretty excited about the game. Many players have in fact picked up their own armies which I think is awesome. Personally I have been working on my Reven army and they are almost completely painted and I will say they look very sharp. I have started using a new technique which makes blending fair easier and the models are turning out great. Hopefully when the next few days I can get some images up because these are some of the best models I have ever painted. With that said I also have a small growing elven force waiting on my desk to be primed and painted so I will have at the very least 2 750 point armies to throw down with in warlord. Eventually I also hope to have an Dwarven,Crusader and Merc force all around the 750 point mark.

Good, enough about warlord and on to Warhammer, not much to say about my elves at the moment I have finished pretty much everything that I was working on painting wise and I am currently awaiting the funds to start picking up some more units. Until I have some extra cash the Warhammer army is at a stand still. For those of you doing the math all of the warlord stuff I currently have was either given to me or was heavily discounted it was pennies compared to what my Warhammer army will cost. I am still aiming to participate in the Fall GT in Dayton provided I get everything complete. I was just informed that my army leader figure has just arrived at the store so thats one less thing I have to get.

On to role playing, I recently picked up a PDF adventure for the Xcrawl setting and I have to say it looks very fun. Basically its a level event that give players a taste of the Xcrawl world without have to have the Xcrawl rulebook. For those of you who don't know what Xcrawl its a D&D setting currently being produced by Goodman games in this setting it is modern times but instead of technology the world has magic as well as all the creatures and races that go along with it. In this world the main form of entertainment is a bloodsport called Xcrawl where teams of players run through dungeons and they exploits are broadcast live on tv for viewers to see. Think medival running man with all the tongue in check humor you can think of. Thats the basically the PDF that I picked up put players into the Division 4 finals which until today had been a non-lethal event but in order to increase rating the organizers have decided to removed the restrictions and let the violence commence. I really like the idea of this game and its prefect for players that like to do a bit of role-playing but are more apt to solve there problems with the sword. Essentially it is one dungeon crawl after another and depending on how players do in the crawls they can be rewarded with bast treasure and prizes eventually even getting sponsored by the various corporations that are in the world. Hopefully withing the next month or so I will be able to to a couple of one off adventures using this intro PDF and maybe even go on from there.

And Finally
The Dresden files,I have recently started reading the Dresden books by Jim Butcher and I can say after finishing up the 1st I loved the book and will soon be starting on the second, I have even picked up Butcher's fantasy series and have just started reading that. In addition to the books some of you may be familiar with the Dresden Files tv show that Sci-Fi recently canceled. I was able to check it out on DVD last weekend and although I liked the show it was to much of a departure from the books for me to really enjoy it. I thought it worked great as a show but for an avid fan it just wasn't enough.

That is it for now hopefully I will get back to the blog in less that a week but we shall see. As always please feel free to leave a comment if you have a question or well...a coment.

Warhammer,Warlord and others

Well its been a while since I have posted and to be honest not much has happened. I have been working on my Warhammer army so my High Elves are coming along. I have a unit of Sea Guard finished and I also have my bolt throwers and crew painted as well. Just need to finish up my Battle Standard Bearer and I will be ready to pick up some more stuff.

Recently I have been on a fantasy skirmish kick so I got out my Confrontation 3 stuff to get it prepped for the Gencon Tournament so I will be getting some C3 games in but I also picked up a new game Warlord by Reaper. I actually got to play Warlord last night and I can honestly say I love the system so much in fact that I wish I would have found the game 4 years ago and not had to deal with the headache of Confrontation for so long. Don't get me wrong Confrontation is a great game it just dealing with the bad translation, poor management and a company that only really half supported it was a bit tedious. Warlord on the other hand is well supported it get updated yearly and the figs although not all of the them meet Rackham level of detail are very cool in their own right. The game is also way cheaper with figures being about half of what Confrontation figs are.

Now some of you out there may claim that I have gamer ADD and in some instances you may be right I do seem to be hopping for game to game at the moment but I myself have come to the realization that I am getting more into the Hobby aspect of gaming where I like to paint cool models and use them in their respective games or use them in any game I choose. With that said I haven't seen any other games out there that I am really interested in so I think I am sticking with Warhammer,Warlord, C3 and Infinity for a while that may change I also have an eye on some Anima Tactics figs but that game is in need of a rule book for me to get into they do have some cool models though.

High Elves,New Links

During my last post I mentioned that I was starting a High Elf army, in the past few weeks I have actually started buying miniatures and I have a burgeoning army now. Currently I have about 1000 pts sitting in various states of assemble on my desk. Currently I have unit of Sea Guard that is 95 percent complete they are all painted I am just finishing up their shields and banners. The rest of the army is still kind of up in the air at the moment I can say this I am choosing to not have a dragon in the list at least initially. My main reasoning for this is the fact that every single High Elf list I look at online has a dragon and I want to be different. I hope to get some images up on the site soon of the in progress figures as well as develop an army construction diary we shall see as of right now I am currently without a camera so image updates are a little hard.

In other news I have added some new links one being the podcast Podhammer which is currently the only podcast dedicated solely to Warhammer Fantasy. I have also added the blog of a reader who commented on my last story it is a blog dedicated to Warhammer and it can be found here.

Not much else going on here at the moment, Indianapolis Motor Speedway is now open so the buzz is picking up for the race. Personally I have some commission work to finish up as well as continued work on my High Elves.

Dragons,MMOs and Miniatures

Well another day another opportunity to get some painting done. Well at least one can try, last night I was about to get a quick dry bush highlight layer onto the Cynwall Dragon I am working on for a friend. Not a lot of progress but the majority of the painting is complete and not I am down to the final wash then basing and sealing and it out the door or rather off the "to be completed" shelf.

In other dragon related news...Rackham has release some images of the new Dirz Wyrm. For anyone that has played Confrontation and know a little bit about the Dirz this model is immediatly recognizable as a Driz creature and quite possible a clone. I will say that I am still a bit confused on why the Cynwall Dragon does not have fore limbs and the Cynwall Wyrm does and this model does as well. It also need to be said that the new Dirz Wyrm is must smaller than the Cynwall Wyrm actually he is very close to the size of the Cynwall Dragon. Could this mean that the Cynwall with be about to use the Dragon model as a Wyrm making him a Titan. Rackham if you are listening make it happen the dragon is great but the 200+ dollar Titan model is a bit much.

Enough about dragons and Rackham Tabula Rasa recently announced that version 1.6 is hitting the servers today and at the latest tomorrow. I can't say that I was unhappy with version 1.5 but with the changes coming in 1.6 mainly the ability to respec your character by participating in Control Point defense and attacks is enough to make me want to spend a bit more time in game. Specially since Guild Wars Factions has consumed most of my MMO gaming time as of late. It doesn't help that GWF has little down time and there is always something to do for lack of a better term the game is just fun, much like Tabula Rasa is but very different all the same.

That about wraps it up for today I would like to mention that I do have a FoW lot up for sale over at BarterTown if anyone is interested details can be found here. Tonight is also Infinity gaming night for my local group hopefully I can get a battle report up using one of the operation paradiso missions. On a side note if anyone in the local Indy area is interested I am trying to arrange a Babylon 5 CCG game. It would be just for fun and I would provide any necessary materials for anyone interested. Anyone interested in the B5 CCG game leave a comment.

EVE Online Trial: Day 2

For anyone who has never played or seen EVE I will 1st say this. EVE is not your normal MMO. EVE hearkens back to games like Elite and Privateer as well as the X universe series(space based trade and combat games). With that said the 1st thing that I noticed as a new player to Eve was the user interface, and boy is there a lot of it. The UI for EVE is unique because it is very configurable and for the most part except for a small part of it it can be setup as needed. This comes in handy as it is very intuitive basically if you have used a modern computer you will understand how the windows work and should be able to view the info you need. Speaking of information EVE is loaded with it almost bombards you with information from the start but new players should not fear as every window you pull up has a welcome screen that gives you a brief outline of what is in the windows as well as links to tutorials on how to use them.

Ok, enough about 1st impressions on to the game play. When you begin the game as a new player you go through an in depth character creation process where you create you character portrait which has a fair share of options which allows you to create your image as other players see you. Its important to setup your portrait because this is the only way other than your starship that other will see you in game. The rest of the character creation process evolves choosing your race and then setting up your background by selecting where you character originates as well as selecting their training. EVE doesn't have any character classes so how you setup your character in creation effects you in the future but you are not locked into playing a particular type of character like in other games.

Now that we have our character are spawned in the newbie star base the location of which depends on you choices during character creation. Now that we are in the star base this is the 1st time we get to see our rookie ship which is not much but it yours, we also get to meet the AI thats riding around in our pod to help through the early stages of the game. The introduction to how everything works is done by way of a voiced tutorial. I recommend that new players follow this tutorial because EVE is very different from any other MMO and not following the tutorial you will miss a lot specially how to navigate and fight. The tutorial also help you establish contacts with your agents an possibly even get you into your second ship.

Well thats a very brief run through of how to get into the game. Currently I am working on a Gallente Pilot that is currently working the Essence area. Right now my character is busy running missions and building up skills. Speaking of skills that is another interesting part of EVE, skills are earned over time even when you are not online. It takes a minute to get your head around it but basically you select a skill that you already know or your buy a skill book from the market and you then train. The nice thing is you can interrupt skills being trained and you don't lose any of the training already spent on it. Its very handy when you need to learn a new level 1 skill from a book to pause a higher level skill that will take hours to learn. So the smart player sets up a long skill to train while off line and then works on any short learning skills while online.

Overall I will say that after 3 days of EVE off an on while playing Tabula Rasa I can see why player sometime call EVE a "slow burn" kind of game. Its a game where you are in for the long haul but there are things to do while you are getting there. I am also impressed by how much of the game is player run. I have read many interview with CCP (the makers of EVE-Online) that their goal was to provide the tools and environment for the players to do as they see fit. This is why EVE has one of the greatest communities of all MMOs.

Hopefully in the next week I can get some screen shots up for my characters as well as some images of my Table Top armies. I would also like to point out that I am still playing Infinity every week and enjoying the heck out of that game my army still need some work but it will all be painted soon. I am also looking into getting in a RPG group as a player because I do miss that aspect of gaming the only problem is that currently in this area its kind of a DnD world with few people willing to branch out....and I personally cannot stand the current incarnation of DnD. On a even greater tangent I am actually looking a selling some of my FoW troops to get into another game Heavy Gear Blitz its still just a thought though.

Force Construction
1 2000ap list

Terrain
Each player will be required to bring 1 container matching their faction(theme if possible) and 3 low walls

Scenario
"The Therians have forced a division of UNA troops back to the surface causing them to fall back into defensive positions. Unfortunately for the UNA the Karmans have decided to join the fight along with the Red Blok. The UNA must work fast to clear the Therians retake the access points back to lower levels before the Red Blok. For the Therians and there Karman allies it is imperative that their push to AVA be unhindered."

Format
All players will be playing on the same table using multiplayer rules as they apply.

Each player will start each round with half(rounded down) of their units active and the remainder in reinforcements.

The objective the game is for the Red Blok and UNA forces to control a set of access points located on the Therian side of the board. The Karmans are tasked with pushing the UNA and Red Blok forces from the defensive positions and off the board.

Each player will be given a 20cm deployment edge where all of their troops may enter the board. Around the table there will also be various "drop zones" that may be used to bring in troops once they are under control

There will be two rounds. The 1st round will be a meeting engagement were all armies are setup in there initial positions and neither side will have an advantage. For the 2nd round depending on which side is leading the initial positions will be adjusted accordingly.

Controlling a Primary Objective of another player 15vp

*Players may not capture a Primary Objective from a player in the same faction.

Gaining RP
Capturing a Nanogenerator 225RP
Controlling a Nanogenerator 175RP

Capturing a Container 200RP
Controlling a Container 250RP

Rolling Reinforcements
In addition to normal reinforcements we are also bringing back something that was seen in the Operation Damocles box set, something we are calling "Rolling Reinforcements". Essentially what this means is that units that are eliminated are placed into your reinforcement pool and may be brought back onto the table using RP like any other unit. The only exception tho this rule are heroes, once a hero has been eliminated they are considered dead for the session. Players are allowed to promote the leader of the unit to an officer by paying the cost of the upgrade when they pay the RP for the unit. This is the only change that is allowed to be made to the unit.

Force Balancing
Since it unlikely we are going to get an even representation of all factions on the table I am working out a way to try and keep numbers as even as possible by giving under represented factions extra RP as long as they have at least 1 unit on the table. The bonus RP will be determined based on how many players their are of a given faction using the following formula.

(Number of Players in Majority Faction - Number of Players for your Faction) X 75

300 RP Maximum per round

Awards
This may not be a tournament but we are going to be keeping a running total of VP across both sessions. The awards will be as follows(Prizes will be determined at a later date)

Overall Best Officer:: Players with the most VP at the end of the battle

Best in Faction:: For each faction represented we will give an award to the highest scoring player.

If anyone has any questions of comments please feel free to leave them here.
